About the artwork
Along with the first Ngomo harp, I also created my second harp at the turn of November and December 2024 in Cameroon. This second is slightly larger and has a deeper and richer sound.
A typical Ngomo often includes a small sculpture of a woman’s head or figure, symbolizing a goddess, although this is not a strict rule. While making it, I was inspired to create a figure of a small star instead of a head, with just a faintly suggested face.
Every Ngomo harp has its own name, and this one is called The Little Star, which in the African language Popi is Wuangasanga.
I brought it back to Europe (at that time I was doing an Erasmus internship in Clermont-Ferrand, France), where I painted it with oil colors in orange and yellow in the school studio.
This harp has a beautiful, deep, and rich sound. It is made from very soft tropical wood from a tree my friends call “asam”—I don’t know the botanical name. The instrument also contains animal skin, metal nails, two pieces of hard wood, fishing line for strings, and wooden pegs.
